Believed to have originated in ancient India, chess made its way to Persia in the 6th century. By the year 1000 it had spread throughout Europe.

About the Chess Committee

The WMSF Chess Committee is the legislative body of the Federation. It recognises FIDE as the official Governing Body of Chess and ensures it’s members follow FIDE rules and regulations. Its members are tasked with the governance of the Federation to ensure that it best represents the interests of the member Chess Associations and of the sport as a whole. Committee memberships are voluntary in nature. The membership of the Committee should be representative of the global community as a whole, both in terms of geography and of language. The Committee should strive to represent the interests of all players and all systems of play.

The WMSF Chess Committee will report to the Board of Trustees. All Committee members serve on a volunteer basis.All members of the WMSF committee and sub-committees are required to be pro-active within the Chess community and share updates publically supporting the World of Mindsports and MSI.

The WMSF require at least one person from each chess association to be represented within the committee. All Chess Associations held within their country are invited to be a part of the WMSF in order to have their say on how the game develops. The aim of the WMSF is to have a representative from each national association to ensure their country and language needs are taken into consideration.

The WMSF Chess Committee Portfolio will generally include, but is not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain a coherent governance structure that will protect the traditions of mindsports for the benefit of the players
  • Conduct the business of the organisation through Sub-Committees and appointed officers as required on such terms and conditions it deems appropriate.
  • Balance and develop leadership and administrative skills within our Committee
  • Implement an agreed ranking system
  • Approve and agree the rules and structure of the competitions in the World Mindsports Championships
  • Promote mindsports across the world
  • Advance the education of young people by promoting mindsports to educational institutions
  • Support research to quantify the neurological benefits of mindsports participation
  • Uphold brand values and the intellectual property of Chess’ intellectual property rights holders
  • Ensure the fair and efficient conduct of competitions or selection trials
  • Promote and develop the highest standard of mindsports competition
  • Create an environment which gives all members the opportunity to develop to the best of their ability
  • Seek appropriate sponsorship for the organisation
  • Set and maintain quality standards for officials and administrators in order to best foster development of the community
  • Understand the issues, priorities, and needs of our players, parents, volunteers, and administrators
  • Plan for the future continuous development of mindsports and its community
